Shakespeare, Spiced Up: Amor with No B.S.
Amor with No B.S., an off-Broadway show performed at The Flea Theater in Manhattan during Valentine’s week (Feb. 11), featured a Gen-Z Latin cast’s unique take on Shakespeare’s classic works. This innovative adaptation, starring Diego Echeverria, Sofía Vilches, Eli Vazquez, and Bralmarys Batista, focused on contemporary issues of love and identity, infusing humor and emotion into timeless narratives like Romeo and Juliet, Twelfth Night, and Hamlet. A remarkable highlight involved Vilches expertly transforming Bad Bunny’s smash “Tití Me Preguntó” into Shakespearean verse, showcasing the linkage between historical themes and the experiences of today’s young Latin audiences.
With a 45-minute duration, Amor with No B.S. merged classic drama with present-day cultural elements under the guidance of producer Roberto Sneider, director Estefanía Fadul, and playwright Matt Barbot, with support from Chispa, the Latin-focused dating app. “Interpreting Shakespeare from a Latine viewpoint isn’t solely about modernizing a classic — it signifies how young Latino singles can embrace their cultural heritages, take pride in their backgrounds, and expand the possibilities of love,” Julia Estacolchic, head of brand and marketing at Chispa, mentioned in a press release. “Our Amor with No B.S. campaign promotes the belief that authentic love thrives when you break free from stereotypes and accept your true self.”
