At the tender age of 69, Glenn Danzig is contemplating eventually winding down his career as a legacy artist. The horror punk icon rose to fame fronting the Misfits, and later also found gold-certified success through his own goth metal band Danzig.
Over the years the frequency of his musical output has slowed to a crawl. Danzig‘s last album, “Black Laden Crown“, arrived in 2017. His Elvis Presley covers album “Danzig Sings Elvis” saw a release back in 2020. Danzig‘s diminished musical output has also been matched by reluctance to tour extensively. Back in 2022, spoke of his disinterest in touring at length, stating:
“I don’t think I’m going to tour anymore. I’m just going to fly out to a show here or there. I’ll maybe be down to do some one-offs. But I just don’t see myself getting on a tour bus anymore.”
In a new chat with Full Metal Jackie, Danzig spoke of his future plans, while also once again explaining why full-scale touring no longer appeals to him. In this latest conversation, he also also weighed in the increasing impact of inflation on making touring less financially feasible. He stated:
“…Everything’s more expensive. The last time I went out — I think it was 2022 or 2023, again just a handful of shows — and prices on buses and gas had just gone [way up]. And then this last time we went out in 2023, they went up three times what we normally pay. And this time it’s even crazier. So, I think it’s also become really hard for a lot of bands to go out there and tour.”
When asked if he had been working on any new material as of late, he confirmed that nothing was in the works, later stating:
“The whole music thing and recording and everything, it’s just changed dramatically where people really don’t buy physical product anymore. They just wanna download it for free online. So there’s really no incentive to new music, unless I’m in the studio and I do something and I wanna give it away for free to everybody. I don’t know if that’s a great business model.”
He later followed up that he still enjoys writing new music, but went on to add:
“I don’t see the music industry changing at all. So I don’t know if I’m ever gonna record again, at least Danzig stuff. Maybe at some point. I don’t know right now.”
Danzig‘s comments were made ahead of his forthcoming rare spate of touring he has planned for this March with Down, Abbath & Cro-Mags opening. Those dates include:
03/21 Las Vegas, NV – The Virgin Theater at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas
03/22 Lincoln, CA – Thunder Valley Casino Resort
03/25 Seattle, WA – WAMU Theater
03/26 Portland, OR – Moda Center
03/29 Los Angeles, CA – Kia Forum
03/30 Phoenix, AZ – Arizona Financial Theatre
At this point in his career, the prospect of Danzig withdrawing from the traditional avenues of a career musician aren’t entirely unwarranted. His sporadic one-off shows fronting The Original Misfits have proven to be lucrative ventures, and he has also been pursuing his passion as a film director/writer.
