Arsenal fan Piers Morgan found some humour amidst the chaos of Liverpool’s 2-2 draw with Everton at Goodison Park on Wednesday night.
The result means Arne Slot’s side extended their lead at the top of the Premier League to seven points, though late drama in the Merseyside derby saw the Toffees snatch a late equaliser.
Gunners fans watched the match with great interest knowing the Reds could have moved nine points clear had they won the game in hand, but it wasn’t going to be easy.
Beto gave David Moyes’ side the lead after just 11 minutes, though there was controversy surrounding the opener. Referee Michael Oliver gave the hosts a free-kick after Illiman Ndiaye was adjudged to have been fouled near the halfway line, with some Liverpool fans claiming the foul was a soft one.
Jarrad Branthwaite took the free-kick quickly and Beto dispatched with conviction. That wasn’t the end of the controversy however, with Oliver brandishing four red cards at full time.
James Tarkoswki equalised for Everton in the dying embers of the game, with Liverpool calling for a foul in the build-up to the goal. VAR checked for offside, but did not intervene regarding a potential foul with the Premier League releasing statements to clarify the officials decision.
Abdoulaye Doucoure celebrated in front of the Liverpool fans, with Curtis Jones rushing across to confront the Everton midfielder, with a scuffle ensuing. Arne Slot was shown a red card in the aftermath, as was Reds’ assistant Sipke Hulshoff.
It’s not the first time Oliver has been at the middle of controversy this season, with Arsenal fans furious at the official’s decision to show Myles Lewis-Skelly a red card in their win over Wolves – only for the decision to be overturned.
After the Merseyside derby, Piers Morgan shared a picture of the official, captioning the post: “My hero.”
Though not every Arsenal supporter will share the same belief, there can be no denying the result hands Arsenal a much needed reprieve in the title race.
The gap to Liverpool is now seven points and the two sides still have to play one another between now and the end of the season. Arteta’s side know they’ll need a near faultless run to bridge that gap and maybe a slice of luck along the way.
